Elder Robert Clayton Ashby, 91, of 1707 Dyers Store Road, Martinsville, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
A native of Henry County, he was born on March 31, 1912, to the late John William Ashby and Minnie Minter Ashby.
He became an ordained Primitive Baptist minister in 1961 and had pastored a number of churches: Weeping Willow Primitive Baptist in North Carolina, Axton Primitive Baptist Church and Sugar Tree Primitive Baptist Church in Axton and Zion Hill Primitive Baptist Church in Vesta. Ashby was a member of Leatherwood Baptist Church and was currently serving there as co-pastor.
He retired from Pulaski Furniture Co.
His wife, Belva Keen Ashby died in October 2002, and he also was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma A. Donavant; and four brothers, Oce Ashby, Andrew Ashby, George Ashby and Melvin Ashby.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia A. Knight of Manteo, N.C.; three sons, Bobby C. Ashby and Ronnie D. Ashby, both of Martinsville and Kenneth R. Ashby of Ridgeway; three brothers, Elder John J. Ashby and Larry A. Asby, both of Martinsville, and Boyd L. Ashby of Penhook; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services with Elder Tom Radford and Minister Dean Ashby officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial park.
