Larry Arnold Ashby Sr., 89, of 999 North Fork Road, Martinsville, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009.
A life-long resident of Henry County, he was born Feb. 9, 1920, to John William Ashby and Minnie Maude Minter Ashby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma A. Donavant, and seven brothers, Ocie Ashby, John Ashby, Andrew Ashby, Robert Ashby, the Rev. George Ashby, Boyd Ashby and Melvin Ashby.
He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater as a private first class with the 29th Division and was on the front line when Germany surrendered.
He was owner and president of Ashby Industries.
He was a member of Victory Baptist Church, and had been involved with church service for more than 60 years, serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir director and gospel singer. He was in the Henry County East Camp of Gideon's International and served more than 30 years as president and chaplain and in the jail ministry.
Surviving are his wife, Arcille Johnston Ashby of the home; three daughters, Nancy Carolyn Eanes of Martinsville, Joan Ellen Wells of Fort Mill, S.C., and Phyllis Ann Keith of Ridgeway; three sons, Arthur Lloyd Ashby of Martinsville, Larry A. Ashby Jr. of Mooresville, N.C. and David Wayne Ashby of Woodlawn; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Victory Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Schelling, the Rev. Tracy Freeman and David Naff officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. today at the church and other times at the home.
