"Old Rip" was the inspiration for the WB network's "Michigan J. Frog." In 1897, Old Rip was put inside the cornerstone of Eastland Courthouse. The courthouse was torn down in 1928 so they could build a new one. When the cornerstone was opened, people realized that Old Rip was still alive. Old Rip was taken to meet President Coolidge and became a nationally known toad. Eleven months after Old Rip was taken out of the cornerstone, he died. He was embalmed, put in a miniature coffin, and put on display inside the new courthouse. In 1973, Old Rip was stolen from the courthouse, but later recovered at the county fairgrounds, although some people don't believe it's the same toad. However, the recovered toad was taken back to the courthouse and put on display.
