Apparent malnutrition cited in death of child
PINEVILLE, MO.-Charges are pending against five members of the family of a 6-year-old Anderson girl who died Saturday of what authorities say was apparent malnutrition.
Gregg Sweeten, chief deputy with the McDonald County Sheriff's Department, said preliminary results from an autopsy showed that the girl was severely underfed and medically neglected.
"She was very underweight for her age," Sweeten said. "It looks from the autopsy report that if she had been taken to a doctor, she could have been saved."
Prosecutor Steve Geeding said charges will be filed today against the mother, grandmother, father, and two uncles of the girl.
Sweeten declined to release the girl's name pending the filing of charges against the family members and notification of relatives.
He said the investigation began Saturday night, when emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from the family's home on Wallain Court in Anderson. He gave the following account of what happened.
The caller said the child was unconscious and not breathing.
Ambulance workers said the grandmother and an uncle were doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation when they arrived. Rescuers believed they had a faint pulse in the girl for a time as they transported her to Goodman.
There, a helicopter met the ambulance and took the girl to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, where she was later declared dead.
"The condition of the child was enough to start the investigation," Sweeten said. "As soon as officiers arrived, it was evident she was malnourished. Myself, Deputy Mike Miller, Deputy Bill Davenport, and Anderson Officier Mike Bickford started the investigation immediately at the home.
"We had an autopsy done in Springfield, and the preliminary results show medical neglect as well as child neglect."
Sweeten said the five family members were arrested Tuesday and were in custody in the McDonald County Jail on a 20-hour hold pending the filing of charges.
Sweeten said four of the family members had lived in Anderson about a year. The father of the child is from Little Rock, Ark., and was in Anderson visiting when the girl died, Sweeten said.
Prosecutor Steve Geeding said he met with deputies and police officers, state child-welfare officials and other investigators from much of the day Tuesday assembling the case before filing charges.
He said felony charges of first-degree assault and child endangerment will be filed today in the Associate Division of McDonald County Circuit Court.
