Geneva Frances Tinney Baskin, 98, passed away peacefully at her home Monday night, Dec. 2, 2013, with her special caregivers, Sharon Philpot and Mary Woody in attendance. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Evan Baskin; her parents, Otos Emmitt and Katherine Russell Yandell Tinney; and a brother, Marvin Ray Tinney.
She is survived by her three children, Joe and wife, Valerie Baskin and their sons, Robert and Rick; Mary Ellen Peacock and her sons, Michael and James Curry; and John and wife, Diana Baskin and their sons, Jason and Jeremy. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, recent arrivals to the Peacock family.
Frances, as she was known to her friends, was born on Feb. 17, 1915, and spent her early years in Gans. She moved with her family in 1929, to Sallisaw where she became a lead player on the school basketball team. When she graduated from high school in 1932, she was thrilled to receive the Citizenship Medal. After high school she worked in the County Attorney's office and other county offices. She attended Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater for one semester in 1934, then returned to Sallisaw to work as a secretary on a government project. In 1936, she went to work for a newly elected state senator in Oklahoma City and after the senate session, for the Corporation Commission. She met her husband, Jim while working there and they were married in Sapulpa on April 7, 1940.
Frances demonstrated a rare sense of adventure as she and Jim moved around the country with his job as a civil engineer with Seismograph Services Corporation in the intense days of oil exploration leading up to and during World War II. For a much more detailed account of her adventures, access the Sequoyah County Times archives for a great article written by Sally Maxwell of the TIMES for Frances' 90th birthday in February 2005.
Frances and Jim lived in Lafayette and Houma, La., from 1947 to 1961, with their children before returning to Oklahoma to operate a small farm in Stilwell. In 1972, Jim and Frances moved to Sallisaw to assist Frances' mother in her late years. Jim passed away Jan. 8, 1976.
Frances was a generous and thoughtful woman, willing to help others whenever she could. Her happiest moments were spent in her kitchen where she baked bread and cakes, and often made delicious meals to share with neighbors and friends. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to her favorite charity "Feed the Children."
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at the Agent & Mallory-Martin Chapel in Sallisaw.
