Mr. Joe C Davis Is Called by Death

Houston has again been called to mourn the death of one of her most prominent citizens. In the death of Mr. Joe C Davis the community has lost a most useful citizens ?? who had given many years of his life to the upbuilding of ?? and county.

Mr. Davis died at his home in the early hours of Friday ??ing, April 11, 1930. He was ?? years of age. Mrs. Davis was the son of George W and Mary E Davis, and was born in Lowndes county, February 28, 1859. He moved with his parents to Chickasaw county when four years old. At the age of sixteen, his father, a disabled Confederate veteran, passed on and Mr. Davis was left to care for his mother, grandmother, four sisters and a little brother. He united with the Baptist church at an early age. He was married to Miss Ella Lowrey, January 25, 1888. To this union seven children were born. A little daughter preceded him to the grave.

Mr. Davis was held in high esteem by his fellow citizens and was honored with public office a number of times. He was elected and served as circuit clerk of Chickasaw county in 1916 and held the office for four years. He served as deputy sheriff for six years under Sheriff T M Clopton. He was elected and served the town of Houston as mayor one term. He was a man of unquestionable integrity and lived a most useful life.

The deceased is survived by his widow; three sons, J B Davis of Muskogee, Okla., Virgil Davis of McAllister, Okla., and Curtis Davis of Houston; three daughters, Mrs. Karenza Gilfoy of Jackson, Mrs. Cary Dodds of Houlka, and Mrs. Lester Lewis of Saucier, Miss. he is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. J B Paden of Houston, Mrs. A E Marshall of Mississippi City, Mrs. Bettie Montgomery of Sparta, beside a large number of relatives throughout this section.

Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock on Saturday morning at the First Baptist Church, the services being conducted by the pastor, Rev. W C Stewart, assisted by Rev. A S Raper and Rev. W N Dodds, the auditorium of the church being filled to capacity with sorrowing relatives and friends. Interment was in Houston cemetery and the wealth of floral offerings attested to the esteem in which this good man was held by neighbors and friends.
