Alfred R. "Slim" Corl, 85, of Akron, PA, died Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Moravian Manor, Lititz, PA. His wife Isabel Messner Corl died July 7, 2007. Born in Hopeland, PA, he was a son of the late Frank and Daisy Hehnly Corl. He was a retired truck driver for Penn DOT.

He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army with the 562nd Anti Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion in Europe as an AA Fire Director, Operator: he supervised a crew of 6 men in the direction of their activities and operated a fire control unit which determined the range and angle of fire. He also supervised maintenance of the gun. He served overseas 17 months and received 2 Battle Stars for the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaign, and the Good Conduct Medal. From 1946-1949 he served 30 months in Japan with the 99th Field Artillery and served 6 months with the 41st AAA Gun Battalion at Ft. Bliss, TX. He was a life member of the NRA and Northern Lancaster Co. Fish & Game Assn., and a member of the New Holland Gun Club, Cocalico Sportsman Club, and the Ephrata VFW. He enjoyed metal detecting.

Surviving are 2 sisters: June (Glenn) Knox of Leola and Nieta Messner of Ephrata, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Harlan R. Corl.

Funeral Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 10:00 AM, Viewing 9-10:00 AM at the Roseboro Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, PA. Interment in Memory Gardens with military honors by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lancaster Co., P.O.
