The son of George & Maria (McClure) Bowman, he married Fanny lnu. and fathered William (b. @1858), Laura (b. @1859), Lawrence W. @1860, d. 03/17/82), Henry "Harry" (b. 02/??/62), George Thomas (b. 01/??/67), Abraham Gramm (b. 06/13/69, d. 10/24/70), and Ephraim (b. @1872). In 1860, he was a shoemaker living with his family in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Hummelstown July 28, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9, 1862 as a private with Co. C, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was promoted to sergeant, date as yet unknown, then to 1st sergeant February 24, 1863, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.

A brief death notice in the Harrisburg Telegraph describes him as "an aged shoemaker" despite his being only sixty-one years of age at his death.
