The son of German-born Lewis & Catharine Gaus, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20. 1861, as a private with Co. D, 4th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 27, 1861. He is in the company register as "Gauss."

He married Elizabeth Davis ca. 1862 and fathered Mary Jane (b. 02/12/68, d. 08/16/68), Brinton Curtis (b. 12/19/67), and Anna (b. ?). He died at Polyclinic Hospital from "chronic bronchitis" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor. His death certificate claims an 1834 birth year but provides an age at death of 82-5-11 that calculates to the date shown above.
