The daughter of French-born and Pennsylvania-born Ellenora (Elliott) Bale, she married John Bale, who served with the 127th Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War. Although the mother of a newborn, she opted to travel with her husband during his military service and serve as a nurse. Whether they took their child with them is as yet unknown.

She died at her son Thomas's home.
