The son of Maryland-born Samuel & Nancy Anna (Gish) Greenawalt, in 1860 he was a clerk living in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall with light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Hummelstown July 31, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9, 1862, as a private with Co. C, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to sergeant, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.
2. Enlisted in Harrisburg July 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there July 18 as a corporal with Co. D, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to sergeant, and honorably discharged with his company November 6, 1864.
3. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 14, 1865, as private the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. I, and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.

Cause of his death is listed as "chronic nephritis."
