A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-two in Hummelstown February 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 18 as a private with Co. I, 107th Pennsylvania Infantry, then promoted to corporal, date as yet unknown, and to sergeant February 27, 1863. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer February 29, 1864, at Mitchell's Station, Virginia, only to be captured at the battle of the Weldon Railroad on August 19, 1864. By October 9, he was incarcerated in the stockade at Salisbury, North Carolina, where he was admitted to the prison hospital and died the same day.
