The son of John & Catharine (Unger) Griffith, in 1860 he was living with his farming family in Middle Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 16, 1864, as a private with Co. H, 1st Pennsylvania (Stewart's) Militia Battalion, and honorably discharged with his company November 14, 1864.

He married Mary A. lnu., but children, if any, were not found. In 1880, he was living in Steuben Township, Fremont County, Indiana, but died "instantaneously" at his home in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, from "acute dilation of heart" and "fatty degeneration of heart." He had been a member of Henderson Post No. 443, G.A.R.
