The son of Elias & Louisa (Yingst) Crist, in 1860 he was a coach maker's apprentice living in South Annville Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Annville September 17, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Lebanon October 21 as a private with Co. K, 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded at the battle of Fair Oaks (Seven Pines) on March 31, 1862, he was hospitalized, but none of his available military records contains a discharged. According to the 1890 Veterans' Schedule, he discharged by surgeon's certificate to date August 25, 1862.

He married Amanda Boger ca. 1864 and fathered Isora (b. 08/21/64 - married Romanus Grove), Anna J. (b. @1866), Ray S. (b. @1867), Abbie E. (b. @1868, d. 1870), Nile W. (b. @1873), and Bessie L. (b. 12/23/79 - married John Keifer). He became a dentist after the war and in 1870 and thereafter was living with his family in Hummelstown, Dauphin County. Amanda died September 4, 1888, and he married Mary Aucherman ca. 1890. He died at his daughter Isora's home from "arteriosclerosis."
