The son of Peter & Nancy (Stuckey) Dasher, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living with his family in East Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, where they had lived in 1850, although he is not found in the 1860 census.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg at the overstated age of eighteen February 7, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 10 as a private with Co. C in the one-year organization of the 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 24, 1865.

He married Sarah Margareth "Sallie" Spidel sometime during or before 1870, but they apparently had no children and were living together in the 1880 census. Sallie's status is unknown, but he married Amelia Wagner, fathering Joe (b. 10/03/90) and Zelma Pauline (b. 09/22/94 - married Samuel Alleman Bomgardner). He died in his home from a "cerebral hemorrhage" with "mitral regurgitation" a contributing factor. He was also known as "Joseph."
