His death certificate reports the birth location shown above, but there are reports that he was born in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, that are unconfirmed. The son of George W. & Eva (Stouffer) Cassel, in 1860 he was living with his farming family in Swatara Township, Dauphin County.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Dauphin County October 29, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 2 as a private with Co. C, 177th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 5, 1863.

He married Sophie Zerfoss May 19, 1864, in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, and fathered Mary (b. @1866), Isaac Zerfoss (b. 07/06/68), Effie Eva (b. 08/23/70 - married Harry Weaver Horst), Charles Geho (b. 08/31/74), and Emma Elizabeth (b. 04/17/88 - married a Kinney). Cause of his death is listed as "lobar pneumonia right lung" with "advanced age" a contributing factor.
