The son of Leonard & Maria Magdalena (Uhrich) Countryman, he married Frances Givens or Gibbons March 3, 1846, in Harrisburg, fathering Susanna (b. 11/09/46 - married Francis M. Alexander), Elizabeth (b. 03/07/50), Solomon (b. 01/??/61), and Frances "Fanny" (b. 03/08/64). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Middletown, Dauphin County, February 28, 1865, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 1 as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. D and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.
