aka Charles Rohrer

The son of Frances Marshall, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living somewhere in or near either Dauphin or Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. It is not certain if his father was Francis or his mother Frances.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of nineteen and mustered into federal service at Lancaster March 9, 1865, as a private with Co. I, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company December 6, 1865. He served as "Charles Rohrer" and is in the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file as "Rohrour" which is how appears in the company register. The reason for his use of an alias is as yet unknown.

He married York County-born Elizabeth Ann Cockley and fathered Elmer (b. @1868), Anna (b. @1872), William C. (b. 03/17/79), Amanda E. (b. 06/11/81 - married Arthur M. Harlan), Carrie (b. 10/??/85 [?]), David C. (b. 02/02/85), and Charles Grant (b. 06/12/86 - 1888 in the 1900 census). Elizabeth died October 6, 1889, and he married divorcée Amanda Emerick, née Shiley, March 23, 1902, in Middletown, fathering Elsie M. (b. 04/20/98 - married a Rosetta). The couple married within days of Amanda's final divorce decree.

The birth date shown above is questionable despite reflecting what is on the tombstone. He is in the 1880 census at the age of thirty-three, and the 1900 census claims an April 1847 birth date. His birth location is also a question mark. The 1900 census claims a German birth while the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file says Reading, Berks County, and the 1880 agrees with Pennsylvania. It appears quite possible that the tombstone's age at death of 57-0-14 should be 55-0-14. No obituary was found in any online newspaper archive.
