The son of Jonathan Philip & Justina Cope, in 1860 he was a shoemaker living in Conewago Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.
He married Anna Barnes August 15, 1861, but she died March 11, 1862.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Lancaster July 22, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 24 as a private with Co. K in the hundred-day organization of the 195th Pennsylvania Infantry.
2. Re-enlisted in the field at Monocacy Junction, Frederick County, Maryland, September 4, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. C in the one-year organization of the 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with all others who had re-enlisted to date June 21, 1865.

He married Mary Slesser February 15, 1866, in Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, and fathered William S. (b. 10/21/70), Edward M. (b. @1873), Anna Mary Agnes (b. 01/21/75 - married Samuel H. Alexander), Daniel Forester (b. 05/26/87), and Clinton C. (b. 10/18/82). A member of Harrisburg's Simmons Post No. 116, G.A.R., he died from "acute nephritis" at his daughter Agnes's home.
