The son of John & Catherine Peipher (et al), in 1860 he was a teamster presumably living in East Hanover Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 8" tall and had sandy hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service, neither of them with the erroneous regiment claimed on the tombstone:
1. Drafted at the overstated age of twenty in Lebanon County October 23, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 29 as a private with Co. C, 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia:), and honorably discharged with his company August 17, 1863. He is in the company register and the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file "Peiffer." Why a conscript would give a false age is a question mark, assuming that the birth date shown above is correct.
2. Enlisted in Harrisburg March 7, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 8 as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. D, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865. He is in the company register and his pension index as "Peipher" but in ARIAS as "Pifer."

He married Mary Ann Garman ca. 1864 and fathered William Henry (b. 07/11/64), Samuel H. (b. 10/10/65), Mary A. (b. @1867), Michael J. (b. 01/27/69), Isaac L. (b. 08/10/71), Aaron M. (b. 02/18/73), and Christian C. (b. 05/21/74). By 1870, he was living in Middletown, Dauphin County. Cause of his death is listed as a "cerebral hemorrhage" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor.
