A 2nd Lieut. of the Wyoming Artillery during the Mexican War, he was a Major of Company C, 46th Pennsylvania Volunteers Regiment during the Civil War. He was a victim of friendly fire, being killed near Darnestown, Maryland by a member of his own regiment, Private John Lanehan, who was later hanged for the killing.
