Lance Cpl. Nicholas B. Erdy, 21, of Williamsburg, Ohio was killed May 11 when their amphibious assault vehicle struck an explosive device while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Karabilah, Iraq. He was assigned to Marine Forces Reserves 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Columbus, Ohio. He graduated in 2002 and joined the Marines the following year. A week before his unit left Columbus, Erdy proposed to his high-school sweetheart, Ashley Boots. The wedding was to be sometime after his expected return in November. His grandmother got a letter from her grandson on the day the family learned he had been killed. "We're as safe as we can be," he wrote. He thought of becoming a firefighter when he left the military. He was the son of Bill and Jane Rosselot Erdy, brother of Erin Erdy, fiance of Ashley Boots, grandson of Bill and JoAnn Rosselot, Bill Erdy Sr. and the late Barbara Erdy.
