Army Sgt. Michael C. Barkey, 22, of Canal Fulton, Ohio; assigned to the 1484th Transportation Company, Ohio National Guard, Akron, Ohio; killed July 7 when a tire blew out on the military vehicle in which he was riding, the driver lost control and the vehicle turned over in Ramadi, Iraq. Barkey was a member of the 1484th Transportation Company based in Akron and had been in the service for nearly four years. Barkey would send home videos showing him having fun with other soldiers in his unit. Michael played football and basketball at Canal Fulton Northwest High School and earned an associate's degree in fire technology from the University of Akron. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry and Margaret (Hoffman) Blake and Edmund (Tony) Barkey. He is survived by his parents, Hal and Julie (Blake) Barkey; brothers, Todd of Sebring Florida, John, and Tony of the home; sister, Therese of the home; and sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Vincent Sanchez of Zolfo Springs, Florida; grandmother, Gertrude Barkey of Navarre, Ohio, seven nieces and nephews, many aunts, uncles, cousins, countless other friends, and the many people whose lives he unknowingly touched.
