Army Spc. Richard A. Hardy of Newcomerstown, Ohio lived in Bolivar until his parents divorced, then lived in the Canton area for a while until he moved back with his father in Dennison. He graduated from Timken High School in Canton in 2000. He had dropped out of school, but decided to go back and get his diploma. Richard was real proud he did that. His father owns about six acres of land and one of his favorite pastimes was riding his dirt bike on it. The other thing was barbecue. Every time he came home, he father had to have a barbecue. He said it beat the hell out of MREs (meals ready to eat, which replaced C-rations). Rick said there was nothing like a home-cooked meal. In addition to his father, he is survived by: his mother, Doris G. Espenschied; sisters and brothers-in-law Kristy Anderson and Jessica Tackett; grandfather Glendon B. Hardy; step-grandmother Carol Espenschied. Richard died when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M2A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle during combat operations at age 24. It was election day in Iraq, and citizens voted on a new constitution.
