Fire Chief William McFadden died suddenly after returning to the Alarm and Signal building after the Neal Cafeteria fire. He was in command of the crews and directed operations. Reports indicate that Chief McFadden became ill at the fire scene but continued in his duties. After returning from the fire he apparently experienced a massive heart attack.
William McFadden was named Chief of the department, December 27, 1934, and assumed the position, January 1, 1935 succeeding Frank B. Ramby who served as Chief for 27 years. Chief McFadden was the third man to hold the position in 58 years. He was 60 years old.
