Highland Township resident Bill Rose, 42, died on the job, working as a Basic Emergency Medical Technician for Star EMS, around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Bill Grubb, president and CEO of Star EMS, said rumors that he was killed by a patient on the job were false. Rose was transporting a patient outside of Common Ground Crisis Center at Doctor's Hospital of Michigan on Huron Street in Pontiac when he fell to the ground.

The Doctor's Hospital of Michigan confirmed that Rose was not attacked by a patient. Calls for comment to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department Pontiac substation were not returned before deadline.

Grubb said the psychiatric patient was trying to get off the stretcher at the time, but a CT scan proved that Rose did not die from a head injury.

"It appears to be a natural death," said Grubb. "He fell to the ground and was telling his partner he needed oxygen. His partner got help from people, got him on the stretcher and took him to the hospital, where he went into cardiac arrest. They put in a very valiant effort trying to save him."

Rose's body will be taken to the Oakland County Medical Examiners for an autopsy.

Grubb said Rose worked at Star EMS since June 2008 and was currently enrolled in the Paramedic Program. Rose planned to receive his Paramedic license in November 2012 and was engaged to be married. "Things were just getting going for him," said Grubb.

Grubb said when he arrives at work today, it will definitely feel like someone is missing.

"He never had a bad word to say about anybody. He was one of those guys who was extremely passionate, would do anything for anybody else. He was dependable, a good coworker and a part of the family," he said.
