STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The retired FDNY EMS lieutenant who was killed in a violent collision between an ambulance and an SUV in Eltingville Monday night had gotten engaged just months ago, according to a longtime friend.

David Restuccio, 58, of Meiers Corners, who was working as a paramedic on the ambulance at the time of the crash, was planning to marry a Fire Department doctor, Michael Hagai, 31, told the Advance.

"He was recently engaged. It was only four or five months ago," Hagai said. "He was so
happy about that."

Hagai is Restuccio's downstairs tenant and identified himself as a longtime friend.

Restuccio, a father and grandfather, died when his ambulance collided with a BMW SUV at 7 p.m. near the intersection of Hylan Boulevard and Seacrest Avenue.
