Lorraine Mae Avers, 91, died Feb. 16, 2014, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born May 14, 1922 in Burlington, Vt., to James and Florence (Bouchard) Steele. Lorraine lost her father at the age of 17. Lorraine and her mother moved to Florida to be near relatives. That is where she met her husband of 66 years. On Dec. 27, 1941, she married Everett Eugene Avers in Tampa, Fla.

The couple moved to Georgia while Gene served in the Army. After five years, their first child was born. They moved to Manhattan, Kan., for a year then Gene and Lorraine settled in Hutchinson where they raised their six children. Lorraine was a homemaker and active in her church, St. Teresa's and later Church of the Holy Cross where her children attended school. Lorraine enjoyed biking, swimming, skating (ice and roller), bowling, and especially dancing. Later in life, Lorraine took up golf and played in the ladies league at Paganica golf course. Lorraine was very active until late in her life. She was also a seamstress and enjoyed knitting for her family.

Survivors include: six children, James Thomas Avers and wife Judy of Wichita, Robert Leon Avers and wife Pam of Edmond, Okla., Debra Jean and husband Phil Miller of Hutchinson, Constance Lynn Avers of Valley Center, Janice Kay and Jim Connizzo of Manhattan and Donald Eugene Avers and wife Trudie of Riverside, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, Paul Avers and Monique, Jason Avers and Brianna, Brandon Avers, Jill Fortner and Tony, Monica Holder and Brad, Staci Charlton and Chris, Bryce Miller and Brandi, Jamie Connizzo, Christin Kearns and Ralph, Ashley Connizzo, Gavin Avers and Sara, Colin Avers and Trevor Avers; 17 great-grandchildren and a great great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Eugene Avers in Sept. of 2007.

Parish rosary will be 10 a.m. and funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson, with Father Joseph Eckberg presiding. Burial will be at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Memorials may be made to the Church of the Holy Cross, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
