Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Leipzig, Germany, he served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 28th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallantry at the battles of Droop Mountain and Piedmont, Va". He was the father-in-law of Union Major General Godfrey Weitzel.
