Mary Frances Funderburk was born April 1, 1938 to Elmer and Martha Huffman Funderburk at Deering, Mo., and died July 28, 2014, in Memphis, Tenn., at the age of 76 years.
Frances became a Christian at age ten, and transferred her membership from the Micola Baptist Church to the First Baptist Church in Steele in 1952, and has been a very active member since. Her faith in God and her church family meant a lot to her. She believed that we were put here for a purpose and that we are to serve the Lord and one another. She felt that "If I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living will not be in vain." She thoroughly enjoy the old humans and Southern Gospel music, which were a big inspiration to her.
She was a graduate of the Steele High School Class of 1956, and attended two quarters at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
She began her first full time job after college, on her 19th birthday, at the Welfare Office in Caruthersville, Mo., as a stenographer, and worked there from April 1, 1957 to August 28, 1959. She started her civil service career August 31, 1959, first working as a clerk-typist and requisitioning clerk in Base Supply at Blytheville Air Force Base. She was promoted November 13, 1961 and worked in the Registrar's Office at the base hospital coding medical records and transcribing medical dictation. On March 31, 1969 she began working for the Social Security Administration in Blytheville, Ark., as a Service Representative. She was promoted to Claims Representative in October of 1974, and retired June 2, 1995.
After retirement she became interested in family history and devoted a lot of her time, not only to her own family, but also assisted many other people, especially by compiling several volumes of obituaries for the Steele and Caruthersville libraries, and the Pemiscot Historical Society. She became a member of the historical society around 2000, and for several years has been the chairman of the Pioneer Heritage Award committee. The purpose of the Pioneer Heritage Award is to honor persons who are over 75 years of age, and whose life story in some way contributed to the community and social betterment.
She was preceded in death by her oldest sister, Lee Ilace Bailey; a brother, Rufus, and sister that both died in infancy; and a grand-nephew, James Douglas Homod.
She is survived by two sisters, Mollie Brownfield, Cedar Park, Tex. and Carolyn Morales, and husband Louis, Oxnard, Calif.; two brothers, Bob Funderburk, of Elburn, Ill., and Virgil Funderburk, and wife, Bonnie, of Opelika, Ala.; five nephews; six nieceds; five grand-nephews; eleven grand-nieces; five great-grand-nepews; and one great-grand-niece.
Visitation was held Friday, August 1, 2014 for 1-3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Steele.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Steele with Rev. Michael Funderburk officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele.
Pallbearers were Brian Funderburk, Steve Bailey, Kenny Jones, Michael Huffman, Danny Robertson and Johnny Carter. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Brooks, Gene Reams.
