Lawrence "Larry" Michael Hermes, Jr., age 90, died on Monday, the 10th of November 2014, at his home in Houston. He was born on the 30th of July 1924, the first child of Lawrence M. Hermes, Sr. and Maria Bridgwater Hermes.
His early years were spent on a small farm in rural Texas. He graduated from Yoakum High School and received a BA degree from Rice University in February 1944. In his senior year he began his service with the U S Navy and later received his commission as an ensign. He served on the LCIG 471 gunboat at the battle of Iwo Jima and received the Bronze Star award for bravery in action. Larry's professional career involved exploration and production of minerals for Magcobar and as vice president for Dresser industries for 29 years. He continued his career as a successful mineral management consultant until he retired at age 88. Larry loved his work and the required world travel.
He was a life-long member of the American Chemical Society and the International Wine and Food Society. Larry was a renaissance man who loved and supported the Houston Symphony, the Houston Ballet, the MFA and other cultural venues.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kay of 59 years; children and their spouses, Lawrence and Patty, Arthur and Susan, Maria and Jeff, Amalie and Jeff, Carolyn and Bruce. He took great pleasure in his grandchildren, John, Louisa, Jessie, Violet, Nolan, Lucy, Annie and Kate. He treasured fond relationships and the love of his siblings, Malcolm, Jessie and Robert and their families. Larry was a member of Holy Rosary Church and held all the Dominican clergy in fond regard.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until nine o'clock in the evening on Thursday, the 13th of November, at the Bradshaw-Carter Home, 1734 W. Alabama Street in Houston, where the recitation of the Holy Rosary will commence at half-past five o'clock.
The funeral mass is to be offered at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 14th of November, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 13202 FM Road 531 in Halletsville, Texas.
The Rite of Committal is to follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Halletsville.
