One of my favorite Aunts.
Eldest child & daughter of the late Katherine Dolecki Koper & John Koper. Helen was born, at home, on June 4, 1910 in Detroit, Michigan. According to her Baptismal Certificate her Godfather was her maternal grandfather, Pawel Dolecki.
Ironically, she passed away on the 26th anniversary of her mother, Katherine's passing.
Helen married Joseph Stempien on February 15, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, in a civil ceremony. Helen & Joe were married in St. Hyacinth Catholic Church 2 weeks later.
Helen & Joe carried on the tradition of most Polish Catholic families & had a large family of their own.
Helen is survived by 11 children:
9 sons: Joseph Jr, Ronald (Eva), William (Betty Jean), Anthony (Carolyn), Charles, Robert (Carol), Richard (Veronica), David (Paulette), & Leonard (Elide).
2 daughters: Delores (Bob) Linton & Patsy (George) Crow.
36 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren
4 brothers: Walter Koper, Raymond (Elvera) Koper, Irvin (Sophie) Koper, & John (Sally) Koper.
5 sisters: Lottie Nowakowski, Dorothy (Tony) Zuzga, Getrude (Joe) Novak, Catherine (Ed) Cox, & Margret (Joe) Sliwinski.
She was predeceased by her parents & 3 brothers, Edward, Antoni, & Norbert.
Auntie Helen was a typical Koper. She LOVED to play cards.
I can remember visiting my Auntie Helen & Uncle Joe & having the other Koper Aunts & Uncles there to visit too. Uncle Joe & Auntie Helen lived in the country so everyone always loved to visit & seemed to have a knack of knowing to show up @ the same time without any planning.
There would be ALL NIGHT card parties.
Those are some of my fondest memories.
