Robert was a 1945 graduate of Mount Carmel High School and a 1950 graduate of Susquehanna University.

He served in the Navy's submarine service during World War II as a radioman aboard the USS Spinax (SS489)

Robert had worked as a tax accountant in Mount Carmel since the mid 1950s. He enjoyed his career and worked every day up until his death.

In addition, the Crusaders locker room was formally named in Pittello's honor in 2001, with a commemorative plaque posted outside the room.

Most recently, he was a member of the coaching staff that helped lead the Crusaders to the 2009 Liberty League championship. That performance awarded Briggs and his staff Coaching Staff of the Year honors.

In 1985, he was reunited with former SU head coach Jim Garrett at Columbia University as an assistant to Garrett. Pittello also served three years as an assistant under legendary prep coach Joe "Jazz" Diminick at Pittello's alma mater, Mount Carmel Area High School.
