— MOUNT CARMEL — Robert A. "Bob" Pittello, 83, of 419 W. Fifth St., passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at the Schuylkill Medical Center South in Pottsville.
He was born April 25, 1927 in Mount Carmel, a son of the late Charles and Ernestine (Chango) Pittello. He was married in 1951 at St. Peter's Church, Mount Carmel to the former Judith DiFrancesco, who preceded him in death in 1965.
Robert was a 1945 graduate of Mount Carmel High School and a 1950 graduate of Susquehanna University.
He served in the Navy's submarine service during World War II as a radioman aboard the USS Spinax (SS489)
Robert had worked as a tax accountant in Mount Carmel since the mid 1950s. He enjoyed his career and worked every day up until his death.
He was a member of Divine Redeemer Church in Mount Carmel and a former member of St. Peter's Church.
He was appointed to the Union National Bank board in Mount Carmel in 1981 and became chairman of the board on June 25, 2009. He was a member of the Mount Carmel Rotary Club since 1987, Ed Romance Hall of Fame, Susquehanna University Hall of Fame, the Mount Carmel Benevolent Order of Elks Lodge and the American Hose Fire Company in Mount Carmel.
Robert coached at Susquehanna University since 1953, making him actively involved with the football program for 48 of the past 63 seasons. He had been with the team, as either a player or a coach, longer than anyone in the history of the program and is the only player in team history to have his jersey number retired. The university retired his number, 66, during the 1998 season. In addition, the Crusaders locker room was formally named in Pittello's honor in 2001, with a commemorative plaque posted outside the room.
Pittello's playing career at Susquehanna began in 1948. He was the starting guard for the Maroon and Orange under both head coach Amos Alonzo Stagg Jr. and Mr. Pittello began his coaching career with Susquehanna in 1953 under Stagg Jr. and went on to serve as an assistant coach with the program under five different head coaches, non-successively.
During his tenures, he helped guide SU to two undefeated seasons and three MAC Northern Division Championships. Most recently, he was a member of the coaching staff that helped lead the Crusaders to the 2009 Liberty League championship. That performance awarded Briggs and his staff Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
In 1985, he was reunited with former SU head coach Jim Garrett at Columbia University as an assistant to Garrett. Pittello also served three years as an assistant under legendary prep coach Joe "Jazz" Diminick at Pittello's alma mater, Mount Carmel Area High School.
He is survived by a longtime friend, Mary Lou McCann, of Mount Carmel; a sister-in-law, Mary Pittello, of Mount Carmel; an uncle, Carmen Chango, of Hershey; also nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Mosella, Ann Swinko and Mary Grabuski; also one brother, Peter Anthony Pittello.
Friends and family are invited to the viewing from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the Joseph J. Stutz Funeral Home, Mount Carmel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 2 at Divine Redeemer Church, Mount Carmel. The Rev. Robert Yohe will be the celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Mount Carmel Township.
