A rosary was read Thursday night, May 7, at Chamberlain-Fisher Funeral Home in Adel. A funeral was held Friday, May 8 at St. John's Catholic Church south of Adel. Burial was at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel.
DeFord was born March 12, 1920 in Des Moines. After graduating from Des Moines East High School and serving in World War II, he and his wife, Rosie, moved to an acreage near Adel. They later moved to town.
DeFord began at the Dallas County News in 1951 and became general manager in 1965. He was widely know for his editorial column, "by George".
He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 80, the American Legion, the Adel Lions Club and St. John's Catholic Church. He was a charter member and the first president of the Adel Lions.
DeFord is survived by his wife, Genarose; a daughter, Julia Fox, and grandson, Zachary Fox.
