Served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He graduated from Princeton in 1941 and joined the Naval Reserves. In 1944 he became a cadet. He was the pilot of TBM Avenger torpedo bomber "FT-36" [TBM-1C - BuNo 46094], that was part of the infamous Flight 19 squadron, that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle during a routine 5-ship overwater navigation training mission out of Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
