A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-four and mustered into federal service at Albany, New York, July 13, 1864, as a private with Co. G, 94th New York Infantry, and honorably discharged with a detachment June 28, 1865, at Satterlee U.S. Hospital, Philadelphia. Whether or not he transferred to Co. H as claimed the alleged tombstone inscription is unknown, but so far no evidence of that transfer has been found.
