The son of Rudolph & Maria Clouser, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Littlestown, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5’ 5” tall with black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 6 as a private with Co. E, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg. His tombstone misidentifies his regiment as the “156th Pa.”

He married Pennsylvania-born Mary Ann Irely and fathered Samuel R. (b. 04/04/67), Anna Mary (b. @1869), Harriet Elizabeth (b. 03/06/71 - married a Finnegan), Sarah (b. 08/11/74 - married John W. Phillips), William (b. 02/17/77), John Harvey (b. 08/30/79), and Susan D. (b. 06/19/82 - married George Judy). In 1870 & 1890, he was living in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, in 1880, in nearby Middletown, but he died in Harrisburg from "uremia." His mother applied for a widow’s pension for her husband and in it listed young Rudolph’[s birthday as July 7, but the date from his death certificate is used here.
