A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Middletown August 6, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, during the assault on Marye's Heights, he was transported to Washington DC and admitted to Patent Office U.S. Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
