He is not found with certainty in the 1860 census but presumably was living in or near Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, which could include nearby Middletown, Dauphin County. A laborer by occupation, he stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Harrisburg January 30, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 8 as a private with the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. I, and honorably discharged with his company June 28, 1865.

According to his obituary in the Harrisburg Evening News and corroborated by his pension index, he served in the post-war army with Co. K, 4th U.S. Infantry, although but no regular army service record was located.

He married Elizabeth McGill ca. 1867 and fathered Anna (b. @1867), Harry (b. 08/06/68), Mary (b. @1870), Jennie (07/06/70 - married a Hipple [same person as Mary?], James A. (b. 02/20/77), William D. (b. 06/10/80), Jesse (b. 05/25/83), and Clara (b. 03/18/86 - married a Baker). Cause of his death is listed as "hypostatic pneumonia" with "chronic myocarditis" a contributing factor.
