Both his birthplace and parents are subject to question. His obituary in the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal claims he was born in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although Rockingham County, Virginia, is also reported. That same obituary claims he was the son of Dr. Abraham Breneman, but a variety of family trees assert his parents were George & Barbara (Vinegar or Phenegar) Brenman, and Jacob & Mary (Beery) Breneman are also reported. He was a graduate of Philadelphia's Pennsylvania College of Medicine but in 1850 was still claiming "agriculture" to be his life's work.

He married Mary Ann Elliot and fathered George Clayton (b. 08/15/46), Ella J. (b. 06/22/48 - married Frederick W. Byrod and William R. McCloskey), Ida A. (b. 03/??/50 - married Robert F. Landis), John Elliott (b. @1852), Grace E. (b. 06/22/56), Laura A. (b. 05/09/58 - married Arthur Benner), and Ada B. (b. 10/07/64 - married Ephraim B. Fetterhoff). In 1860, he was a doctor living with his family in Maytown, East Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-eight, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 26, 1861, as 2nd lieutenant of Co. A, 10th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 31, 1861.

In 1865, he opened a practice in Conewago Township, Dauphin County. Cause of his death was reportedly Bright's disease. The above mentioned obituary identifies him as "Abraham N. Brenneman."
