The son of John & Catherine (Leckey) Core or Kohr, in 1860 he was presumably living in or near Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, where it appears he lived all his life, although he is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 28, 1862, as a private with Co. A, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 8, 1863. (He may have prefaced this service with a stint in the militia unit known as the 1st City Zouaves that provided a base for 127th Pennsylvania recruits.)
2. Enlisted in Harrisburg June 25, 1863, mustered into federal service there June 30 as a private with Co. F in the six-month organization of the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), and honorably discharged with his company January 6, 1864.
3. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 23, 1864, as a private with Co. E, 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry (113th Pa), promoted to sergeant, and honorably discharged with his company July 20, 1865.

He married Elizabeth Penina Kurtz ca. 1867 and fathered Minnie J. (b. 10/??/67 - married Amos L. Huntzberger), Elsie D. (b. 03/06/69, d. 11/18/69), George Warren (b. 07/??/74), and John Edwin (b. 07/08/83). Cause of his death is listed as a "cerebral hemorrhage."
