A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 20, 1863, mustered into federal service there August 28 as a private with Co. C, 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry (117th Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 14, 1865.
He married the much younger Emma Keener sometime during or before 1880, but children, if any, are unknown. Cause of his death is listed as "aortic regurgitation [and] chronic interstitial nephritis." Emma died six months after him. His birth year is a question mark. He is also reported to have been born in 1839, his death certificate claims 1840, and his obituary reports he died at the age of seventy-seven. His obituary spells his surname "Cover," but his death certificate says "Coover."
