Kenneth John Darby, 47, of Sonora and a 12 year resident of Tuolumne County, was killed when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on French Gulch Road north of Murphys Grade Road in Calaveras County.
Mr. Darby was a guitarist and mandolin player with the local Black Irish Band. He also had performed with Cireus Fun and Arena All-Stars. A lifelong musician who grew up in Moraga, Contra Costa County, and graduated from El Camino High School in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles County, he played in Los Angeles jam bands of the 1970s and ‘80s: the U.S. Blues Band, The Full Effect and The Wildest.
His friends and family described him as a "gregarious bear of a man" who loved life and making music.
While music was his dream career, Mr. Darby also held a variety of positions including telecommunications positions with Rolm and IBM. He also had been employed in construction, logging, roofing and as a handyman. At the time of his death, he was employed as a personal care assistant for Sonora Community Home Care. His self-description was "Professional Nice Guy."
More than his love for music was his love for his wife, children, stepchildren and brother who survive him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Darby and Florence Evans Darby; and his brother, Bruce Darby.
