Thomas Hayes b.1817 was a member of Zion's Camp in 1833 he would have been 17 years old and he did contracted cholera and survived. He would have known the prophet Joseph Smith!
About this time Brother Ezra] Thayer and Thomas Hayes were attacked with the cholera, and bro. Joseph Hancock was taken during the storm I called the camp together...

Kirtland Elders' Quorum Record: (Page 87) Thomas Hayes (also Heyes) (c1817-1846). Not the Thomas Hayes who participated in the march of Zion's Camp. Ordained elder 25 Jan 1836. Expelled from MO 1838-1839. Probably died at Mt. Pisgah, IA while crossing plains to Great Basin. (Page 3) 25 January 1836: This evening a meeting, of Elders, was [called] by president of said quorum, to insturct them, that they may prepare themselves for the holy anointing.(1) The meeting being duly organized, Presidents, Sidney Rigdon, F.G. Williams, and Hyrum Smith, were chosen to give said instructions...2ndly: The presidents ordained and blessed according to the blessings of the Sons of Zion....Tho[mas[- Hayes,... (1) The "holy anointing" was part of a complex of sanctifying ordinances intended to prepare the brethren to receive a spiritual outpouring known in Kirtland as "an endowment of power."
