He married Rachel A. lnu. and fathered Mary E. (b. @1861), Arthur H. (b. @1863), Albert E. (b. @1865), Ada V. (b. @1868), Laura A. (b. @1871), Minnie A. (b. @1875), and Carrie M. (b. @1878).

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted (presumably) in Carlisle October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 1 as a private with Co. A, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863. The 158th Pennsylvania Infantry was a state drafted regiment and as such companies were almost exclusively staffed by men from the same county. The main exception to that was the substitute who could have been from anywhere. So, did Abraham Hess move to adjacent Cumberland County prior to the 1862 draft or did he enlist as a substitute? Unfortunately, individual service records for those serving with 1862 state drafted regiments often do not differentiate between the two enrollment methods. Either situation is possible for Abraham but neither is certain.By 1868, he was living with his family in Omadi, Dakota County, Nebraska, but died at age 58-6-27 in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, where he had been a member of Smith Post No. 22, G.A.R.
