William Tillinghast Dennis
Death of Last Survivor of Company Sailing for California in 1849
A Native of Newport and Once Well Known Tailor and Propretor of Yuba Dam Market
Mr. William Tillinghast Dennis the last survivor of the 75 who constituted the company which sailed from Newport in 1849 in the Audies Clarke for the then newly discovered gold mines in California died early Thursday evening at the residence of Mrs. Chappell on Farewell Street where he had made his home for some time. He was in his eighty-ninth year and had been for a long time in poor health with diseases of old age.
The deceased was a native of Newport being a son of Darius Dennis and a grandson of Captain John and Catherine (Tillinghast) Dennis. When a young man he learned the tailor's trade of Messrs David T and Issac Gould who were the leading tailors of their days in Newport, and worked for some time at this business. In 1849 he joined the company which February 11 of that year sailed in the Audies Clarke for California with three other members of the Dennis family--Captain Ayrault Wanton Dennis, George Engs Dennis and William Engs Dennis. Of this company Mr. W. T. Dennis was the last known survior the late William E Dennis, Times M. K. Southwick and Captain George B. Slocum having died within a little more than four years.
Mr. Dennis remained in California several years carrying on the tailoring business but returned to Newport in the late sixities and opened in 1874 to market on Broadway which he conducted until about 1880. This he named the Yuba Dam from the place where he had lived in California and from this he came to be known as Yuba Dam Dennis. He had not been in any business for more than 10 years before his death.
He married a daughter of the late Gilbert Chase former collector of the port of Newport and she died June of 1909. They had no children. He was a half nephew of the late William Engs Dennis, the two having married sisters. His nearest relative is J. D. Dennis Jr. a nephew who is in --------------and was a son of John D. Dennis who for many years kept a grocery store on Broadway. Mr. William T. Dennis had never held public office and was not a member of any fraternal organizations. For many years he lived in the old house on the corner of Thames and Po_ lat Streets.
