Born in a Orthodox Serb family in southeast Bosnia, Sokolović was taken away at an early age as part of the devshirmeh system of Ottoman collection of young boys in order to be raised to serve as janissaries or in the imperial administration. He rose through the ranks of the Ottoman imperial system, eventually holding positions. He was assassinated in 1579, ending a 15-year reign as the de facto ruler of the Ottoman Empire.
