Please note :
This surname - WILD- is often times recorded as WILT.

The son of John Adam & Elizabeth Catherine (Heiser) Wilt [sic], he married Hannah Rebecca Dunn ca. 1850 in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Alice S. (b. 10/31/50, d. 08/08/64), John Richard (b. @1852), Ianthia Rebeca (b. 07/15/56 - married Elijah Brown Heller and a Booher), Elizabeth M. (b. 07/07/58), John Adam (b. 06/01/62 - questionable), and Mary Harriet (b. 01/26/65 - married John Henry Rothrock). In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Monroe Township, Juniata County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four and mustered into federal service in Rochester, New York, February 20, 1865, as a private with Co. D, 47th New York Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 10, 1865, at New Bern, North Carolina, two months prior to the dissolution of the regiment.

There are questions as to the spelling of his surname. All of his obituaries, census entries, and the 1863 draft registration identify him as "Wilt" while his military records use "Wild." It is conceivable that his surname was spelled "Wild" but pronounced "Wilt" in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect.

There are also questions as to why he enlisted in Rochester, New York, when there was no shortage of Pennsylvania regiments he could have joined. Nothing suggests he ever lived in New York, and he is in the 1863 draft registration as a resident of Greenwood Township, Juniata County. According to family trees and his offspring's death certificates, his children were born in Pennsylvania, some about the time of his enlistment, and he was living in Junita County in 1870. Men sometimes enlisted in a regiment that was passing through their area, but that is not the case here. During February 1865 the 47th New York was in North Carolina and had been in that region for some time. None of his obituaries say more about his military service other than he was an "old veteran."
