The son of William Henry & Margaret (Smith) Spade, in 1860 he was a teacher living in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-two in Hummelstown August 1, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9 as a private with Co. C, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.

He married Mary Ann Smith and fathered Emma (b. 04/07/69 - married John George Henry Kohlhaas), Webster C. (b. @1872), Mertie (b. 12/??/79), and Luther F. (b. 04/09/86). Cause of his death is listed as "apoplexy."
