In 1860, he was a shoemaker presumably living in or near Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted with a group from Marietta and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 24, 1861, as a private with Co. K, 15th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 7, 1861.
2. Enlisted in Philadelphia March 2, 1864, mustered into federal service there March 24 as a private with Co. G, 186th Pennsylvania Infantry, and discharged by surgeon's certificate for an injury to his right leg that plagued him the rest of his life, specifics as yet unknown, although he claimed the cause was "rheumatism." It was not a war wound because the 186th Pennsylvania performed only garrison duty and never left Philadelphia. He successfully applied for a disability pension August 8, 1865. It has been alleged that in between his two terms of service he served with a Confederate partisan ranger unit. There is a Confederate service record for a Benjamin Murphy of about the same age but so far no evidence it is the same man.

He married Anna E. Leonard ca. March 4, 1870 or 74 (both reported) in Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County, and fathered Maud (b. @1870 - married a Walsh), Loyd Addren (b. 07/24/75), Benjamin Arthur (b. 05/??/78), and Lavinia (b. 10/01/83 - married Edward E. Townsley). In 1880, he was living with his family in Oliver Township, Mifflin County, in 1900, in Marietta, Lancaster County, but died at his son's home in Steelton, Dauphin County. Steelton's Lascomb Post No. 351, G.A.R., attended his funeral, although his obituary in the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal claims he was a member of Marietta's Child Post No. 226. Either he had transferred membership or Lascomb was acting as a stand-in for Child.
